HMRC ‘still fails British taxpayers’ – MPs

A group of MPs has blasted HMRC, the UK’s tax body, for ‘still failing’ taxpayers across the UK.

Among its concerns are a perceived failure to conduct sufficient prosecutions, and an accusation that the taxman only answers half of customers’ phone queries to its call centre.

The Public Accounts Committee has even said the service was so poor tax collection could be affected. It points out that, in 2011-12, HMRC responded to nearly three-quarters of customer calls, or 74%, but by the beginning of this year, that figure had dropped to just half of calls from the public being answered.

The committee also said its previous recommendations had not been taken up by HMRC.

Finally, MPs said the UK taxman’s record of just 11 prosecutions for offshore tax evasion over the previous five years was ‘woefully inadequate.’

HMRC has denied the accusations, and insisted it has now taken on an additional 3,000 staff members to deal with the backlog of work.

This track record from the UK’s taxation authority makes for uneasy reading and highlights the need for good accountants to help you meet your legal obligations.
